About the Product

Miss Piggy puts on a bright display of pink flowers in early spring, right after the snow melts, above thick, dark green, glossy leaves. The flower color is consistent from year to year, and the leaves are broader and more substantial than many bergenias.

It forms a wide canopy of foliage 16 to 18 inches tall and up to about two and a half feet across, making a durable evergreen groundcover or edging. The leaves make a squeaking sound when rubbed together, which is where the pigsqueak name comes from. Deer and rabbits leave it alone.

What it looks like

Clusters of bell-shaped flowers about three quarters of an inch wide in bright pink, held on thick reddish stems above the foliage. Leaves are large, broad, rounded, thick and leathery with a glossy dark green surface, forming a wide, low canopy. The plant is 16 to 18 inches tall in bloom and 28 to 32 inches wide. At peak bloom bright pink clusters stand over the shiny dark green leaves.

Growing it with lavender

Bergenia prefers a bit more moisture and some shade compared with lavender, so use it as a bold edging in a partly shaded border or along a path rather than in the dry lavender bed.

Care

Grow in part shade to full sun in average, well-drained soil with regular moisture; leaf color is richest with some shade in summer. Hardy in USDA zones 4-8. Remove winter-damaged leaves in early spring and divide crowded clumps after flowering every few years.

Hardy in zones 4a–8b

Spring or early fall.

When it arrives

Your plug tray

20-cell plugs are large enough to plant straight out; 72-cell plugs do better potted into 4-inch pots for a few weeks. Keep moist and shaded from hot sun until rooted in.

When to plant

Spring or early fall.

How deep

Set the thick creeping rhizome at or just below the soil surface, same depth as in the plug; leaves should sit above the soil.

Spacing

12–18 inches apart for groundcover.

Soil

Adaptable: clay, loam or sand; best with organic matter · pH 6.0–8.0

Fix-it tip: Mix compost into sandy soil to hold moisture. It tolerates clay, but loosen it so water doesn't stand around the rhizomes.

Sun

Part shade (tolerates full sun in cool climates; full shade (fewer flowers)).

Winter sun deepens the red-bronze leaf color, but hot afternoon summer sun can scorch leaves.

Dormant
New growth

Don’t give up on it

Is it alive? What spring looks like

Evergreen to semi-evergreen. Leaves often look battered or bronze after winter; new leaves and pink flower stalks appear in early to mid-spring.
