Mission to Mars is named for the Red Planet, and its thick green leaves are so heavily speckled with burgundy red that the whole plant looks red. The color is strongest in direct sun.
The long leaves arch with their tips curving down, while the edges curl up to show off cinnamon-colored spines. It starts as a low, arching rosette about 8 to 10 inches tall and nearly 2 feet wide, and with age can reach about 2 feet tall and 3 feet wide.
What it looks like
Thick, long, lance-shaped leaves about 2¾ inches wide are green but densely speckled with burgundy red, the spots merging so the leaves look mostly red. The leaf tips curve downward while the margins curl upward, displaying small cinnamon-brown spines. The leaves form an arching rosette 8 to 24 inches tall and 20 to 36 inches wide as it matures. In full sun the rosette glows a deep burgundy red.
Growing it with lavender
Mangave loves the same full sun and sharp drainage as lavender, so a pot of it set among the lavender beds or on a sunny gravel patio makes a bold, spiky contrast for summer before it moves indoors.
Care
Plant in full sun, where the leaf color and spotting are strongest, in gritty, fast-draining soil or cactus mix, and water when the soil is dry. In the Great Lakes region, grow it as a summer container plant and bring it indoors to a bright window before frost. Hardy outdoors in zones 8 to 10.
