About the Product

Misty Lace is a mid-sized goat's beard, falling between its small and large parents in height. In early summer it carries large, creamy white, feathery plumes on dark red stems above compact mounds of astilbe-like leaves.

It was selected for its tolerance of hot, humid summers, yet it is also hardy to zone 3. Use it like a large astilbe in woodland borders, shade gardens or mass plantings, where the plumes glow in low light. Bees visit the flowers, and deer leave it alone.

What it looks like

Large, branched, feathery plumes 8 to 10 inches long of tiny creamy white flowers held on slender dark red stems above the leaves. Leaves are compound and fern-like, divided into toothed leaflets in medium green, forming a compact basal mound. The plant is 36 to 42 inches tall in bloom and 18 to 24 inches wide. At peak bloom creamy plumes on red stems rise well above the lacy green foliage.

Growing it with lavender

Goat's beard wants rich, moist soil and shade, so it belongs in a woodland or shade garden rather than beside lavender; plant it with hostas, ferns and astilbe.

Care

Grows in full sun to full shade in fertile, humus-rich soil kept evenly moist; more sun means more water. Hardy in USDA zones 3-7 and tolerant of summer heat and humidity. Choose its spot carefully, since established plants are hard to move; cut back the flower stems after bloom or leave them for winter interest.

Hardy in zones 3a–7b

Spring or early fall.

When it arrives

Your plug tray

Pot 72-cell plugs into 3–4 inch pots of moist mix and grow on in bright shade until roots fill the pot, then plant out. Keep them evenly moist the whole time.

When to plant

Spring or early fall.

How deep

Set the crown at soil level, the same depth as in the plug.

Spacing

Large types 3–4 feet apart; compact hybrids 18–24 inches; dwarf types about 12 inches. Check the plant's mature size.

Soil

Rich, humusy loam · pH 5.5–7.0

Fix-it tip: Add plenty of compost or leaf mold to hold moisture. In dry or sandy soils, mulch 2–3 inches deep to keep roots cool.

Sun

Part shade (tolerates full shade; full sun only in cool climates with constantly moist soil).

In hot summers, afternoon sun browns the leaves.

Is it alive? What spring looks like

Shoots emerge from a woody crown in mid-spring, often reddish, then leaf out fast. Plugs in their first year may stay small and not bloom until year two or three.
