Monterrey Jack has light yellow flowers with a sharply defined raspberry red eye and paler midribs. The broad, rounded, ruffled petals open wide and flat to 5½ inches, and the blooms glimmer with a fine sparkle.
The perfectly formed flowers are displayed well on candelabra-branched scapes in early summer.
What it looks like
Rounded flowers about 5½ inches across with broad, ruffled petals in light butter yellow, a well-defined raspberry red eye, paler yellow midribs and a green throat, with a diamond-dust sparkle, opening wide and flat. Each bloom lasts a day, but many buds open in turn on branched scapes rising to about 24 inches above a fountain of long, arching, strap-shaped medium green leaves. The foliage clump is about 14 inches tall and 18 to 24 inches wide. At peak bloom pale yellow flowers with raspberry eyes are spaced along candelabra-like scapes.
Growing it with lavender
Its pale yellow and raspberry flowers brighten a lavender bed and thrive in the same full sun and good drainage.
Care
Grow in full sun to light part shade (at least six hours of sun for the best bloom) in average, well-drained soil; once established it handles heat, clay and dry spells. Hardy in zones 3 to 9. Snap off faded flowers for a tidy look, cut bare scapes to the base after bloom and divide crowded clumps every few years.
