Moonglow has a surreal, moonlit look, with silvery blue-green leaves covered in large, dark purple spots. The spots grow more intense with strong sunlight.
Its long, straight leaves are held rigidly out to the sides, forming a low, wide, spiky rosette about 8 to 10 inches tall. It makes a striking specimen in containers and sunny rock gardens.
What it looks like
Long, narrow, straight leaves about 1 inch wide are silvery blue-green, marked with large, contrasting dark purple spots that deepen in full sun. The leaves are held rigidly and nearly horizontal, with tiny spines along the edges and soft tip spines. They form a low, wide, spiky rosette 8 to 10 inches tall and 16 to 20 inches wide. The rosette looks like a flat, pale blue starburst dotted with purple.
Growing it with lavender
Mangave loves the same full sun and sharp drainage as lavender, so a pot of it set among the lavender beds or on a sunny gravel patio makes a bold, spiky contrast for summer before it moves indoors.
Care
Plant in full sun, where the leaf color and spotting are strongest, in gritty, fast-draining soil or cactus mix, and water when the soil is dry. In the Great Lakes region, grow it as a summer container plant and bring it indoors to a bright window before frost. Hardy outdoors in zones 8 to 10.
