About the Product

Nectar Ninja is a compact, rounded hyssop grown for its fragrance and its long run of soft lavender-blue flower spikes from midsummer into late summer. Bees and butterflies work it constantly, making it a natural choice for pollinator plantings and herb gardens.

It grows about 2 feet tall and roughly 3 feet wide, and it thrives in full sun and lean, well-drained soil. Once established it handles drought, and deer and rabbits tend to pass it by. Use it in borders, rock gardens, containers or as a cut flower.

What it looks like

Narrow, lance-shaped, aromatic dark green leaves about 1 inch long line upright, woody-based stems. From midsummer to late summer, each stem ends in a slender spike of small, two-lipped, soft lavender-blue flowers arranged in whorls. The plant forms a dense, rounded, compact mound about 22 to 24 inches tall and 34 to 38 inches wide. Flowers cover the top of the mound evenly. At peak the plant looks like a soft blue dome of flower spikes over fine green foliage.

Growing it with lavender

Hyssop loves the same hot sun and lean, dry soil as lavender, and its soft blue spikes blend with lavender's purple while carrying pollinator traffic well past lavender's main bloom.

Care

Plant in full sun in poor to average, well-drained soil; water regularly the first season, then only in long dry spells. Hardy in zones 4-9. Good air circulation helps prevent mildew, and a light trim after flowering keeps the plant bushy.

Hardy in zones 4a–9b

Spring after frost.

When it arrives

Your plug tray

Plugs are small and dry out fast. Water on arrival, keep in bright light, and harden off a week before planting. Pot 72-cell plugs into 3-4 in pots for a few weeks, or plant into gritty soil once rooted. Pinch tips once for a bushier plant.

When to plant

Spring after frost.

How deep

Crown at soil level, same depth as in the pot.

Spacing

12-24 in apart.

Soil

Well-drained loam, sandy or rocky soil · pH 6.5–8.0

Fix-it tip: Thrives in neutral to alkaline soil. In clay, mix in grit and plant on a mound; avoid compost-heavy beds.

Sun

Full sun (tolerates part shade, especially afternoon shade in hot climates).

Full sun gives the most flowers and the tightest shape.

Don’t give up on it

Is it alive? What spring looks like

A semi-woody subshrub: new leaves break along last year's stems and from the base in mid spring. Wait to see green before pruning so you don't cut live wood.
