About the Product

Overdam is a variegated feather reed grass with leaves striped in creamy white that later turns white with a pink flush. The foliage stays in a low, upright clump under 2 feet tall, so the color sits at eye level in the border.

In late spring, straight, feathery plumes rise to about 5 feet and ripen to sandy tan, holding their shape through the season. It does not reseed, tolerates clay and makes an elegant backdrop for lower perennials.

What it looks like

Narrow, arching blades about ¼ inch wide are green with bright creamy white margins and stripes that fade to white with a pink blush as summer goes on. The leaves form an upright clump under 2 feet tall and 1 to 2 feet wide. In late spring slender stems rise to about 5 feet, carrying narrow, feathery plumes that open with a purplish tint and turn sandy tan. At peak the clump is a bright white-striped base topped by straight, pale plumes.

Growing it with lavender

It shares lavender's need for full sun, and its white-striped leaves and pale upright plumes brighten the back of a lavender bed with a light, airy contrast.

Care

Grows best in full sun in average to fertile soil, including clay; tolerates dry spells once established. Hardy in zones 4 to 8. Cut back to about 6 inches in early spring.

When it arrives

Your plug tray

Plugs arrive in active growth. Water the tray right away, set it in bright light out of harsh wind, and plant within a few days. If you wait, bump them into 3–4" pots. Harden off for a week before planting out, and keep the root ball moist the first 3–4 weeks.

When to plant

Spring is best; early fall also works.

How deep

Set the crown level with the soil; don't bury the base of the stems.

Spacing

18–24" apart for a hedge-like row; 24–30" for individual clumps.

Soil

Adaptable; clay to loam · pH 5.5–7.5

Fix-it tip: Very forgiving, even in heavy clay. Loosen the planting area; no special amending needed.

Sun

Full sun (tolerates light shade).

Best and most upright in full sun. In shade it blooms less and may lean.

A cool-season grass: it's one of the first grasses to green up in early spring, often while nights are still frosty.
