About the Product

Pacific Hybrids are a classic seed-grown primrose valued for big flowers in clear, saturated colors. Expect yellow, maroon, lavender, white, pink and blue-violet, most with a bold contrasting eye at the center.

They bloom in mid spring on plants 6 to 8 inches tall and look best planted in groups, where the mix of colors really shows. They are also a favorite for spring pots and shaded window boxes.

What it looks like

Large, flat, five-petaled flowers 1.5 to 2 inches wide in a mix of yellow, maroon, lavender, white, pink and blue-violet, most with a large bright yellow or contrasting eye in the center. Flowers are held in clusters on short stems just above the leaves. The foliage is a low rosette of crinkled, tongue-shaped, mid-green leaves. Each plant is 6 to 8 inches tall and 6 to 12 inches wide. A mass planting in bloom forms a carpet of many colors, each flower marked with a glowing center.

Growing it with lavender

Primroses want cool shade and steady moisture, so give them a spot away from the lavender field, such as a woodland edge, a shaded front walk or the north side of the house.

Care

Give it part to full shade and humus-rich soil that stays evenly moist but never waterlogged. Hardy in zones 3-8; remove spent flower stems and divide clumps after bloom every few years to keep them vigorous.

When it arrives

Your plug tray

Pot plugs into 4 in pots of rich, moist mix and keep them cool and lightly shaded. Plant out in early spring or fall. Keep evenly moist; plugs may bloom the first spring.

When to plant

Early spring or early fall in cool weather.

How deep

Set the crown level with the soil surface; don't bury the rosette.

Spacing

About 8–12 in apart.

Soil

Humus-rich loam, high in organic matter · pH 6.0–8.0

Fix-it tip: Add plenty of compost or leaf mold so soil stays cool and moist but not waterlogged. Mulch with shredded leaves.

Is it alive? What spring looks like

Among the earliest perennials: rosettes often stay green over winter and bloom in early spring. Leaves may shrink or partly disappear in summer heat, then return in fall.
