About the Product

Palace Purple is the classic purple-leaved coral bells and one of the most widely grown heucheras of all time. Its large, shiny leaves are shaped like maple leaves or stars and range from deep olive green to purplish bronze, with metallic amethyst backs that show through the loose clump.

The plant grows 8 to 12 inches tall and 12 to 16 inches wide. From late spring into midsummer, leafy stems about 20 inches tall carry clouds of tiny cream flowers. It was named Perennial Plant of the Year in 1991 and remains an easy, adaptable choice for edging, containers and mixed borders.

What it looks like

A loose, mounding clump 8 to 12 inches tall and 12 to 16 inches wide of large, glossy, star-shaped leaves with pointed lobes. Leaf tops range from deep olive green to purplish bronze, and the undersides are a shimmering metallic amethyst purple visible where leaves tilt. Leafy stems about 20 inches tall carry airy sprays of tiny cream flowers from late spring to midsummer. At peak the plant is a bronze-purple mound under a fine cream mist of flowers.

Growing it with lavender

Its bronze-purple leaves repeat the purple of lavender flowers along a bed edge with some afternoon shade, as long as it gets a bit more water than the lavender.

Care

Grows in full sun to full shade, with best leaf color in part sun. Plant in average to fertile, well-drained soil and water regularly in dry weather; hardy in zones 4-9. Remove spent flower stems and old leaves in spring, and divide every few years if the crown gets woody.

How to grow Palace Purple

Coral Bells · Heuchera

Hardy in zones 4a–9b

Spring or early fall (at least 6 weeks before freeze so roots anchor).

When it arrives

Your plug tray

Plugs are small and dry out fast. Water on arrival, keep in bright light, and harden off a week before planting. Pot 72-cell plugs into 4 in pots to bulk up, or plant 20-cell plugs straight into the bed. Shade from midday sun the first weeks.

When to plant

Spring or early fall (at least 6 weeks before freeze so roots anchor).

How deep

Set the crown exactly at soil level; the woody stem should not be buried or left exposed.

Spacing

12-18 in apart, wider for large-leaf types.

Soil

Humus-rich loam · pH 6.0–7.5

Fix-it tip: Mix compost into clay or sand. Crowns rot in wet, heavy soil, so avoid low spots and don't pile mulch against the crown.

Sun

Part shade (tolerates full sun in cool climates with moisture; full shade).

Leaf color decides: dark and amber types scorch in hot sun. Varieties bred from H. villosa handle more heat and humidity.

New growth

Don’t give up on it

Is it alive? What spring looks like

Semi-evergreen. Old leaves often look battered in early spring; new leaves unfurl from the center in April. Trim the old ones once fresh growth shows.
