About the Product

Peppermint Patty gives bergenia a new look, with white flowers marked by a pink throat that streaks down each petal and a thin pink edge. The blooms are larger than average and sit on bright rose pink stems in early to mid spring.

Its wavy, extra-thick leaves have prickly toothed edges and stay evergreen. At about 22 inches tall in bloom, it works as an edging, a groundcover in partial shade or a container plant. Deer and rabbits leave it alone.

What it looks like

Clusters of bell- to cup-shaped flowers about 1.25 inches wide, white with a pink throat whose color streaks down each petal and a thin pink picotee edge, held on bright rose pink stems that turn green near the base. Leaves are thick, wavy, glossy green with serrated, prickly toothed edges, forming a rosette. The plant is about 22 inches tall in bloom and 16 to 18 inches wide. At peak bloom candy-striped white flowers rise on pink stems above the leaves.

Growing it with lavender

Bergenia prefers a bit more moisture and some shade compared with lavender, so use it as a bold edging in a partly shaded border or along a path rather than in the dry lavender bed.

Care

Grow in part shade to full sun in average, well-drained soil with regular moisture; leaf color is richest with some shade in summer. Hardy in USDA zones 4-8. Remove winter-damaged leaves in early spring and divide crowded clumps after flowering every few years.

Hardy in zones 4a–8b

Spring or early fall.

When it arrives

Your plug tray

20-cell plugs are large enough to plant straight out; 72-cell plugs do better potted into 4-inch pots for a few weeks. Keep moist and shaded from hot sun until rooted in.

When to plant

Spring or early fall.

How deep

Set the thick creeping rhizome at or just below the soil surface, same depth as in the plug; leaves should sit above the soil.

Spacing

12–18 inches apart for groundcover.

Soil

Adaptable: clay, loam or sand; best with organic matter · pH 6.0–8.0

Fix-it tip: Mix compost into sandy soil to hold moisture. It tolerates clay, but loosen it so water doesn't stand around the rhizomes.

Sun

Part shade (tolerates full sun in cool climates; full shade (fewer flowers)).

Winter sun deepens the red-bronze leaf color, but hot afternoon summer sun can scorch leaves.

Dormant
New growth

Don’t give up on it

Is it alive? What spring looks like

Evergreen to semi-evergreen. Leaves often look battered or bronze after winter; new leaves and pink flower stalks appear in early to mid-spring.
