Pink Lemonade is a bicolor false indigo whose soft yellow flowers age to dusty raspberry purple, so both colors appear together on each spike. Charcoal stems make the blend stand out in late spring and early summer.
It forms an incredibly full, bushy plant three and a half to four feet tall and wide, serving well as a shrub substitute that gives the garden structure. It is easy care, very long lived once established, drought tolerant and deer resistant.
What it looks like
Upright spikes 10 to 12 inches of pea-shaped flowers that open soft butter yellow and age to dusty raspberry purple, with both colors mixed along each spike, on dark charcoal stems. Leaves are three-parted with oval blue-green leaflets. The plant is a full, bushy, rounded mound 42 to 48 inches tall and about 48 inches wide. At peak bloom yellow and raspberry spikes cover the mound.
Growing it with lavender
Pink Lemonade grows in the same sunny, well-drained, lean soil as lavender, and its yellow-to-raspberry spikes lead nicely into lavender's purple bloom.
Care
Plant in full sun to part shade in lean to average, well-drained soil; the deep taproot makes it drought tolerant once established. Hardy in USDA zones 4-9. Choose a permanent spot, since established plants do not like to be moved; expect a couple of seasons to settle in, and cut back in late fall or leave the seed pods for winter interest.
