About the Product

Pistachio Ambrosia has big, flat, rounded chartreuse leaves that light up shady spots, plus upright stems of light pink flowers in midsummer. It holds its color with less leaf burn and discoloration than older chartreuse types.

The mound stays 10 to 12 inches tall but spreads to about 2½ feet wide, making it a strong choice for massing under trees or anchoring a large container. Flower stems reach 28 to 32 inches and can be cut for bouquets along with the foliage.

What it looks like

A low, wide mound 10 to 12 inches tall and 28 to 32 inches across of large, flat, well-rounded leaves in bright chartreuse yellow-green. Upright stems 28 to 32 inches tall carry narrow spikes of small light pink bells in midsummer. At peak the plant is a broad, glowing lime-yellow cushion with slender pink wands standing well above it.

Growing it with lavender

This one wants shade, so plant it in a shaded bed away from the lavender, where its chartreuse leaves brighten dark foliage and ferns.

Care

Best in part to full shade; filtered light or morning sun gives the brightest color. Plant in average to fertile, well-drained soil with regular water, setting plants level with the soil surface; hardy in zones 4-9. Cut back flower stems after bloom and tidy leaves in spring.

Hardy in zones 4a–9b

Spring or early fall (at least 6 weeks before freeze so roots anchor).

When it arrives

Your plug tray

Plugs are small and dry out fast. Water on arrival, keep in bright light, and harden off a week before planting. Pot 72-cell plugs into 4 in pots to bulk up, or plant 20-cell plugs straight into the bed. Shade from midday sun the first weeks.

When to plant

Spring or early fall (at least 6 weeks before freeze so roots anchor).

How deep

Set the crown exactly at soil level; the woody stem should not be buried or left exposed.

Spacing

12-18 in apart, wider for large-leaf types.

Soil

Humus-rich loam · pH 6.0–7.5

Fix-it tip: Mix compost into clay or sand. Crowns rot in wet, heavy soil, so avoid low spots and don't pile mulch against the crown.

Sun

Part shade (tolerates full sun in cool climates with moisture; full shade).

Leaf color decides: dark and amber types scorch in hot sun. Varieties bred from H. villosa handle more heat and humidity.

Dormant
New growth

Don’t give up on it

Is it alive? What spring looks like

Semi-evergreen. Old leaves often look battered in early spring; new leaves unfurl from the center in April. Trim the old ones once fresh growth shows.
