About the Product

Plum Pudding has leaves that are a true plum purple rather than the more common burgundy, with even darker veins and deep purple backs. The leaves are ruffled with bluntly pointed tips, and newer growth has a light gloss.

It forms a low, spreading clump about 8 inches tall and 12 to 16 inches wide that works well as a groundcover when planted in groups. Dainty cream flowers rise on tall 26-inch stems from late spring into early summer.

What it looks like

A low, spreading clump about 8 inches tall and 12 to 16 inches wide of ruffled leaves with bluntly pointed lobes. The leaves are solid plum purple with darker purple veins and deep purple undersides; newer leaves have a slight gloss. Thin stems about 26 inches tall carry airy sprays of tiny cream bell flowers in early summer. At peak the planting is a carpet of rich plum ruffles under a fine cream haze.

Growing it with lavender

The plum purple foliage makes a rich edging in front of lavender in a spot with afternoon shade and slightly more water.

Care

Grows in full sun to full shade; partial shade is ideal in hot summers. Plant in average to fertile, well-drained soil with regular moisture; hardy in zones 4-9. Clip spent flower stems and remove winter-worn leaves in spring.

How to grow Plum Pudding

Coral Bells · Heuchera

Hardy in zones 4a–9b

Spring or early fall (at least 6 weeks before freeze so roots anchor).

When it arrives

Your plug tray

Plugs are small and dry out fast. Water on arrival, keep in bright light, and harden off a week before planting. Pot 72-cell plugs into 4 in pots to bulk up, or plant 20-cell plugs straight into the bed. Shade from midday sun the first weeks.

When to plant

Spring or early fall (at least 6 weeks before freeze so roots anchor).

How deep

Set the crown exactly at soil level; the woody stem should not be buried or left exposed.

Spacing

12-18 in apart, wider for large-leaf types.

Soil

Humus-rich loam · pH 6.0–7.5

Fix-it tip: Mix compost into clay or sand. Crowns rot in wet, heavy soil, so avoid low spots and don't pile mulch against the crown.

Sun

Part shade (tolerates full sun in cool climates with moisture; full shade).

Leaf color decides: dark and amber types scorch in hot sun. Varieties bred from H. villosa handle more heat and humidity.

New growth

Don’t give up on it

Is it alive? What spring looks like

Semi-evergreen. Old leaves often look battered in early spring; new leaves unfurl from the center in April. Trim the old ones once fresh growth shows.
