About the Product

Popsicle Mix is a seed strain of mid-height lupines in a wide range of colors: blue, purple, yellow, red, pink and bicolors. The plants are roughly a foot shorter than classic tall lupines and start blooming a couple of weeks sooner.

At 18 to 24 inches, they fill the middle of a cottage or prairie-style border without needing staking. The spikes are lightly fragrant, cut well and attract bees, butterflies and hummingbirds.

What it looks like

Dense, tapering spikes of pea-like florets come in a mix of blue, purple, yellow, red and pink, with many bicolors that pair a colored lower half with white or pale upper petals. Each spike is thick at the base and narrows to a point of closed buds. Leaves are palmate, with narrow green leaflets radiating from long stalks. Plants form upright clumps about 18 to 24 inches tall and 12 to 16 inches wide, with several flower stems per plant. At peak bloom a group shows a colorful mix of upright spikes above mounds of whorled leaves.

Growing it with lavender

Lupines share lavender's love of sun and sharp drainage, and their early-summer spikes bloom just ahead of the first lavender flowers, handing the color off to the purple wands as they fade.

Care

Plant in full sun to light afternoon shade in average, well-drained soil that leans slightly acidic; avoid heavy clay and wet spots. Best in zones 4-6, where nights stay cool in summer. Remove spent spikes before seed sets, and choose a permanent spot, since the taproot does not like to be moved.

How to grow Popsicle Mix

Lupine · Lupinus

Garden lupines want full sun, cool summers and well-drained, neutral to slightly acid soil that isn't too rich. They thrive in Michigan-style summers but are often short-lived, especially where summers are hot.

Hardy in zones 4a–6b

Spring or early fall; plant young so the taproot isn't disturbed later.

When it arrives

Your plug tray

Lupines dislike root disturbance. Move 72-cell plugs into deep 4-inch pots without teasing the roots, or plant directly once hardened off. Plant out while still young, before the taproot circles.

When to plant

Spring or early fall; plant young so the taproot isn't disturbed later.

How deep

Plant at the same depth as in the plug, crown at soil level; don't break up the root ball.

Spacing

12–18 inches for compact series, up to 2 feet for tall types.

Soil

Light, sandy or gravelly loam, low in nutrients · pH 5.5–7.0

Fix-it tip: Avoid lime and heavy fertilizer; they prefer neutral to slightly acid soil. Loosen clay deeply and add grit so the taproot isn't sitting wet.

Sun

Full sun (tolerates light afternoon shade in warm areas).

In shade they flower poorly and stretch.

Is it alive? What spring looks like

Palm-like leaves appear early in spring from the crown. First-year plants from plugs may bloom lightly; full bloom usually comes the second spring.
