About the Product

PowWow White is a compact, clean white coneflower that blooms in its very first summer. Big daisy-style flowers with a gold center appear from early summer into late summer on sturdy, branching stems, so each plant carries plenty of blooms at once.

At roughly two feet tall it fits the front or middle of a sunny border, a cottage bed or a prairie-style planting, and it makes a long-lasting cut flower. Bees and butterflies work the centers all season, and finches pick at the seed heads in fall.

What it looks like

Flat, daisy-like flowers 3 to 4 inches across with broad, overlapping pure white petals that angle slightly downward around a domed, golden-orange central cone. Flowers sit singly at the tips of stiff, branched green stems held just above the foliage. Leaves are medium green, lance-shaped and coarse-textured, forming a basal clump. The plant is an upright, well-branched clump 18 to 24 inches tall and 12 to 16 inches wide. At peak bloom in midsummer the clump is dotted with a dozen or more open white flowers at slightly different heights.

Growing it with lavender

Its crisp white flowers and gold cones brighten a planting of blue-purple lavender, and both enjoy the same full sun and lean, well-drained soil.

Care

Give it full sun to light part shade and average to lean soil that drains well; once established it handles dry spells with little extra water. Hardy in zones 3 to 8. Snip faded flowers to keep it tidy, or leave the last round of seed heads standing for winter birds.

How to grow PowWow White

Coneflower · Echinacea purpurea

Coneflower wants full sun and well-drained average soil. Native types are tough and drought tolerant; fancy colored and double hybrids need extra care their first year to settle in.

Hardy in zones 3a–8b

Spring through early summer is best, so hybrids root in well before winter.

When it arrives

Your plug tray

Pot plugs into 4 in pots or plant straight out after frost. Keep moist while roots grow. On fancy hybrids, pinching off first-summer flower buds helps the plant build roots and come back stronger.

When to plant

Spring through early summer is best, so hybrids root in well before winter.

How deep

Set the crown even with the soil surface. Don't bury it or pile mulch on it.

Spacing

About 18–24 in apart.

Soil

Average loam; tolerates clay, sand and rocky soil · pH 6.0–8.0

Fix-it tip: Skip heavy compost. In heavy clay, loosen deeply and plant slightly high so the crown doesn't sit wet in winter; that is the most common cause of loss in hybrids.

Sun

Full sun (tolerates part sun).

In shade, stems lean and bloom drops off.

Don’t give up on it

Is it alive? What spring looks like

Basal leaves appear in mid-spring, usually April to May in Michigan; the fancy hybrids can be later. Look for small dark-green leaves at the crown before giving up.
