Live plants are pickup only June 1–September 30. Plugs and potted plants cannot use our shipping path to AZ, CA, HI, ID, NV, OR, UT, or WA; pickup may remain available. Soil-free bare root plants may ship to those states during March 1–May 31 when all remaining rules pass. Montana plug and potted-plant arrivals must be October 1–May 31.

We choose neem oil and lower-impact plant care instead of routinely drenching our greenhouse with lab-manufactured pesticides. We are exploring a screened growing house that may expand future shipping options.

About the Product

Primal Scream is a spectacular, award-winning daylily with enormous 7½ to 8½-inch tangerine orange flowers dusted with gold and centered with a green throat. Classified as an unusual form, its narrow petals twist and curl back with loosely ruffled edges.

The giant blooms are carried on tall, graceful scapes from mid to late July above attractive arching foliage.

What it looks like

Gigantic flowers 7½ to 8½ inches across with long, narrow, twisted and recurved tepals in glowing tangerine orange with a gold-dust sparkle, loosely ruffled edges and a green throat. Each bloom lasts a day, but many buds open in turn on branched scapes rising to about 34 inches above a fountain of long, arching, strap-shaped medium green leaves. The foliage clump is about 20 inches tall and 18 to 24 inches wide. At peak bloom huge spidery orange flowers sway on tall scapes.

Growing it with lavender

Its bold tangerine flowers contrast strikingly with lavender and stand tall behind it in the same sunny, well-drained soil.

Care

Grow in full sun to light part shade (at least six hours of sun for the best bloom) in average, well-drained soil; once established it handles heat, clay and dry spells. Hardy in zones 3 to 9. Snap off faded flowers for a tidy look, cut bare scapes to the base after bloom and divide crowded clumps every few years.

Your bare-root plant

You'll get one or more 'fans' of trimmed leaves on a crown with thick, tuberous roots. Soak roots for a few hours, then spread them over a mound of soil in the hole and cover so the crown sits no more than 1 inch deep.

Expect new growth in about 6 weeks after planting. Bare root ships March–May while dormant, with little or no top growth, and it can look lifeless until then. That’s normal. Green shoots break through in early to mid spring. Evergreen types may look mushy after winter but regrow. Bloom varies by variety, from early summer to late summer.

You won’t be able to tell within 24 hours of arrival whether a dormant plant will grow.

Set the crown, where the leaves meet the roots, no more than 1 inch below the soil surface. Planting deeper reduces bloom.
