About the Product

Prom Dress is a large silver coral bells with heavily ruffled pewter leaves traced in dark charcoal veins. The newest leaves carry a violet flush that matches the leaf backs, adding a soft purple tone to the mound.

The foliage lasts well into autumn, so it pairs nicely with mums and pumpkins in fall displays. It grows 8 to 10 inches tall and 16 to 18 inches wide, with small pink flowers in midsummer. Use it for edging, containers, mass plantings or cutting foliage.

What it looks like

A low, full mound 8 to 10 inches tall and 16 to 18 inches wide of heavily ruffled, rounded leaves in pewter silver with dark charcoal veins. New leaves are flushed with violet, and the undersides are violet as well, showing along the frilled edges. Slim stems carry small pink bell flowers in midsummer. At peak the plant is a crinkled silver-gray mound with purple highlights and a light pink haze above.

Growing it with lavender

Its ruffled pewter leaves echo lavender's silvery foliage at a bed edge with some afternoon shade and a little more water.

Care

Takes full sun to full shade; afternoon shade keeps the silver bright in hot sites. Tolerates poor to average soil as long as it drains well; water during dry spells. Hardy in zones 4-9; trim spent flower stems and old leaves in spring.

How to grow Prom Dress

Coral Bells · Heuchera

Coral bells want part shade and rich, well-drained soil that stays lightly moist. Watch for crowns heaving out of the ground after winter.

Hardy in zones 4a–9b

Spring or early fall (at least 6 weeks before freeze so roots anchor).

When it arrives

Your plug tray

Plugs are small and dry out fast. Water on arrival, keep in bright light, and harden off a week before planting. Pot 72-cell plugs into 4 in pots to bulk up, or plant 20-cell plugs straight into the bed. Shade from midday sun the first weeks.

When to plant

Spring or early fall (at least 6 weeks before freeze so roots anchor).

How deep

Set the crown exactly at soil level; the woody stem should not be buried or left exposed.

Spacing

12-18 in apart, wider for large-leaf types.

Soil

Humus-rich loam · pH 6.0–7.5

Fix-it tip: Mix compost into clay or sand. Crowns rot in wet, heavy soil, so avoid low spots and don't pile mulch against the crown.

Sun

Part shade (tolerates full sun in cool climates with moisture; full shade).

Leaf color decides: dark and amber types scorch in hot sun. Varieties bred from H. villosa handle more heat and humidity.

Dormant
New growth

Don’t give up on it

Is it alive? What spring looks like

Semi-evergreen. Old leaves often look battered in early spring; new leaves unfurl from the center in April. Trim the old ones once fresh growth shows.
