Purple People Eater forms a neat rosette of thick, sturdy blue-green leaves covered in reddish-purple spotting, so it reads as purple from a distance. The color is richest in full sun.
The leaf edges fold upward to show off yellow, orange and cinnamon spines. It grows about 12 to 16 inches tall and up to 2 feet wide, a colorful specimen for containers and sunny rock gardens.
What it looks like
Thick, sturdy, lance-shaped leaves about 2 inches wide are blue-green, densely covered with reddish-purple spots that make the plant look purple from afar. The margins fold upward, displaying small spines in yellow, orange and cinnamon, and each leaf ends in a cinnamon tip spine. The leaves form a neat, symmetrical rosette 12 to 16 inches tall and 16 to 24 inches wide. In full sun the rosette glows purple with warm-colored spines along the edges.
Growing it with lavender
Mangave loves the same full sun and sharp drainage as lavender, so a pot of it set among the lavender beds or on a sunny gravel patio makes a bold, spiky contrast for summer before it moves indoors.
Care
Plant in full sun, where the leaf color and spotting are strongest, in gritty, fast-draining soil or cactus mix, and water when the soil is dry. In the Great Lakes region, grow it as a summer container plant and bring it indoors to a bright window before frost. Hardy outdoors in zones 9 to 11.
