About the Product

Rain Dance is a non-vining bush clematis with unusually large flowers, 2.5 to 3 inches across, in rich indigo blue. The outward-facing blooms have darker center stripes and lighter edges, and they appear from late spring into midsummer with more to follow.

Plants grow about 3.5 feet tall and 2.5 feet wide. Because it does not climb on its own, give it a small obelisk, a few stakes or sturdy neighbors to lean on. It is lovely in cottage gardens, containers and as a cut flower.

What it looks like

An upright to leaning, shrubby perennial about 3.5 feet tall and 2.5 feet wide with many slender stems that do not twine. Leaves are medium green, divided into oval leaflets 2 to 3 inches long. Outward-facing flowers 2.5 to 3 inches across have four to six pointed, slightly twisted sepals in indigo blue, with a darker purple-blue stripe down the middle of each sepal, lighter blue edges and a cluster of pale cream stamens in the center. At peak bloom dozens of indigo stars cover the upper half of the plant, which leans on a support.

Growing it with lavender

It enjoys sun like lavender, and its indigo flowers rising on a support behind lavender make a lovely blue-on-purple combination in early summer, as long as its roots get mulch and regular water.

Care

Plant in full sun to part shade in average, well-drained soil and water regularly; keep the roots cool with mulch. Hardy in zones 3-7. Provide a small support early in the season, and cut stems back to a few inches above the ground in late winter or early spring.

Hardy in zones 3a–7b

Spring after hard frost or early fall.

When it arrives

Your bare-root plant

Arrives as a clump of thick, fleshy, light-brown roots with dormant buds or short stem stubs at the crown. Soak 30 minutes, plant with the crown 1–2 in deep, and keep moist. Shoots may take a few weeks.

Expect new growth in 6 to 8 weeks after planting. Bare root ships March–May while dormant, with little or no top growth, and it can look lifeless until then. That’s normal. Shoots come up from below ground in mid-spring after it dies back completely over winter. Nothing shows above ground before then; that's normal.

You won’t be able to tell within 24 hours of arrival whether a dormant plant will grow.

When to plant

Spring after hard frost or early fall.

How deep

Set the crown about 1–2 in below the soil surface with roots spread out. Slightly deep planting helps it send up more stems.

Spacing

About 2–3 ft apart; mature clumps are 2–3 ft wide.

Soil

Loamy soil rich in organic matter · pH 6.0–7.5

Fix-it tip: Work in compost at planting and mulch to keep roots cool and moist. Not fussy about pH. In clay, improve drainage so the crown doesn't sit wet.

Sun

Full sun (tolerates part shade).

Best bloom in full sun. In shade it sprawls more and needs support.
