About the Product

Red Velvet is the tallest of its group, reaching about 32 inches tall and 3 feet wide, with large cherry-red bee balm flowers from midsummer into late summer. New spring growth comes up with a bronze tint before turning green.

Well-branched stems produce a second flush after the first, extending the bloom period. It suits the middle to back of a border and larger landscape beds, resists powdery mildew well and is a favorite with hummingbirds.

What it looks like

Large, shaggy flower heads are made of long, tubular florets in rich cherry red, radiating from a crown set on dark reddish bracts. Heads stand at the tips of sturdy, well-branched square stems, with a second round opening on side shoots below. Leaves are opposite, oval to lance-shaped, dark green and toothed, with bronze-tinted new growth. The plant forms a large, rounded clump about 32 inches tall and 36 inches wide. At peak bloom red heads cover the top half of the plant.

Growing it with lavender

Bee balm prefers richer, more evenly moist soil than lavender, so set it in a neighboring bed with better soil and regular water, where its cherry-red heads carry on the summer color and bee traffic near your lavender.

Care

Grow in full sun to part shade in average to fertile soil with regular water, especially during summer dry spells. Hardy in zones 4-8. Give it room for air to move around the stems to help keep leaves clean, deadhead faded heads for a longer show, and divide the clump every few years in spring.

When it arrives

Your plug tray

Plugs arrive in active growth. Water the tray right away, set it in bright light out of harsh wind, and plant within a few days. If you wait, bump them into 3–4" pots. Harden off for a week before planting out, and keep the root ball moist the first 3–4 weeks.

When to plant

Spring or early fall.

How deep

Set the crown at soil level.

Spacing

18–24" apart for air flow.

Soil

Loam; tolerates clay · pH 5.5–7.5

Fix-it tip: Add compost to sandy soil to hold moisture. It handles clay well; just loosen the area.

Sun

Full sun (tolerates part shade).

Full sun and air flow limit mildew and keep stems upright.
