Red Wing forms a large, refined rosette made up of many deep red leaves, making it one of the boldest red succulents you can grow. It looks great in containers and in sunny garden beds.
It grows about 16 to 18 inches tall and 2 feet wide. It is drought tolerant, thrives in heat and full sun, and deer and rabbits leave it alone.
What it looks like
Numerous thick, lance-shaped leaves in a deep wine red, with some green showing near the base, form a large, full, refined rosette. The leaves radiate evenly and arch gently outward, with small teeth along the edges and short tip spines. The rosette is 16 to 18 inches tall and 24 to 26 inches wide. In full sun the whole plant is a rich, deep red star.
Growing it with lavender
Mangave loves the same full sun and sharp drainage as lavender, so a pot of it set among the lavender beds or on a sunny gravel patio makes a bold, spiky contrast for summer before it moves indoors.
Care
Plant in full sun, where the leaf color and spotting are strongest, in gritty, fast-draining soil or cactus mix, and water when the soil is dry. In the Great Lakes region, grow it as a summer container plant and bring it indoors to a bright window before frost. Hardy outdoors in zones 9 to 11.
