About the Product

Riptide is a Stokes' aster with a dense, well-branched habit that becomes completely covered in periwinkle-blue flowers, 2.5 to 3 inches across. Strong basal branching means many more stems and blooms than older types.

It handles summer heat and humidity well and grows into a full clump about 2 feet tall and nearly 3 feet wide. Rich dark green leaves set off the flowers, which bloom from midsummer into early fall with deadheading.

What it looks like

Flat, cornflower-like flowers 2.5 to 3 inches across in periwinkle blue, with an outer ring of fringed petals surrounding a center of smaller, finely cut florets with pale stamens. Dozens of flowers are held on many short, branching stems, nearly covering the plant. Leaves are long, smooth, lance-shaped and rich dark green. The plant is a dense, rounded clump 24 to 26 inches tall and 32 to 36 inches wide. At peak it looks like a broad dark green mound blanketed in periwinkle discs.

Growing it with lavender

Stokes' aster shares lavender's liking for full sun and well-drained soil, and its large, fringed blooms in similar purple, blue and white tones carry the lavender color theme through late summer after the main harvest.

Care

Plant in full sun in well-drained soil; it adapts to poor or fertile ground and handles some dryness, but soggy winter soil can rot the crown. Hardy in zones 5-9; deadhead spent flowers to keep new buds coming into early fall, and mulch lightly after the ground freezes in colder areas.
