About the Product

Rose Quartz is a creeping phlox with large rose-pink flowers, 1 to 1.25 inches across, in a shade between soft pink and ruby. It blooms early and covers the plant thoroughly.

The plant holds a neat, mounded shape for its first couple of years and looks good later into spring than older types, spreading more as it matures. Use it for edging, rock gardens and slopes. Butterflies and bees visit.

What it looks like

Flat, five-petaled flowers 1 to 1.25 inches across in medium rose pink, larger than those of typical creeping phlox, cover the plant densely. The leaves are small, narrow, needle-like and green. The plant forms a mounded groundcover about 4 to 8 inches tall and 24 to 28 inches wide. At peak bloom it is a full cushion of rose pink.

Growing it with lavender

Creeping phlox likes the same sun and well-drained soil as lavender, and its rose-pink carpet makes a neat spring edging along lavender beds, blooming weeks before the lavender does.

Care

Plant in full sun in average, well-drained soil and water during long dry spells. Hardy in zones 3-8. Plants hold a mounded shape for the first couple of years and spread wider with age; shear lightly after bloom to keep them dense.

How to grow Rose Quartz

Phlox · Phlox subulata

Two very different plants: garden phlox (P. paniculata) is a tall summer bloomer that wants sun, rich moist soil and good air flow; creeping phlox (P. subulata) is a spring groundcover for sun and lean, well-drained soil.

Hardy in zones 3a–8b

Spring or early fall.

When it arrives

Your plug tray

Pot 72-cell plugs into 4-inch pots or plant out after hardening off. Creeping phlox plugs can go straight into the ground 12 inches apart to knit into a mat. Keep moist until rooted.

When to plant

Spring or early fall.

How deep

Plant at the same depth as in the plug or with the bare-root crown just at soil level.

Spacing

Garden phlox 18–24 inches for air flow; creeping phlox 12–18 inches for a mat.

Soil

Garden phlox: rich, moist loam. Creeping phlox: sandy or gravelly, well-drained soil. · pH 5.5–7.5

Fix-it tip: Add compost for garden phlox. For creeping phlox, add grit to heavy clay or plant on slopes and walls so it never stays wet.

Sun

Full sun (tolerates light part shade).

Garden phlox in shade gets more mildew and fewer flowers; creeping phlox blooms best in full sun.

Is it alive? What spring looks like

Creeping phlox stays evergreen and flowers in early to mid-spring. Garden phlox emerges from the crown in mid-spring as reddish shoots and blooms in mid to late summer.
