About the Product

Sassy Summer Lemon carries some of the largest flower heads you will find on a yarrow, in a clean, sunny lemon yellow. It is also the earliest of its group to bloom, starting color in early summer and continuing into late summer.

The plant is tall and substantial, around 30 inches, with sturdy stems that stay upright. It spreads wide enough to fill space quickly in a sunny border or meadow planting, and the blooms cut and dry well. Pollinators love it, and deer and rabbits typically avoid it.

What it looks like

Very large, flat flower heads 4 to 6 inches across made of tiny florets in bright lemon yellow with slightly golden centers. The heads sit atop strong, upright stems, forming a broad yellow canopy. Leaves are green, finely divided and feathery, forming a full base. The plant is tall and broad, 28 to 32 inches tall and 36 to 42 inches wide. At peak bloom the plant is crowned with big, bold yellow plates.

Growing it with lavender

Sassy Summer Lemon grows in the same full sun and lean, well-drained soil as lavender, and its early lemon yellow blooms overlap with lavender's first flush for a bright purple-and-yellow combination.

Care

Plant in full sun and lean to average, well-drained soil; water regularly the first season, then only during long dry spells. Hardy in USDA zones 3-8. Shear the stems back by about half once the first flush fades to encourage a second round of flowers and keep the clump tidy.

How to grow Sassy Summer Lemon

Yarrow · Achillea

Yarrow wants full sun and lean, well-drained soil. Rich soil, extra fertilizer, or wet feet make it floppy and short-lived.

When it arrives

Your bare-root plant

Expect a tan, fibrous root mass with a small crown and maybe short gray-green shoots. Soak roots 20-30 min, spread them in the hole, crown level with soil. Plant soon; keep roots moist until then.

Expect new growth in about 6 weeks after planting. Bare root ships March–May while dormant, with little or no top growth, and it can look lifeless until then. That’s normal. Ferny leaves often stay green over winter. New gray-green growth pushes from the base in early spring (about April in Michigan). Flower stems follow in late spring.

You won’t be able to tell within 24 hours of arrival whether a dormant plant will grow.

When to plant

Spring after hard frost, or early fall at least 6 weeks before the ground freezes.

How deep

Set the crown (where stems meet roots) level with the soil surface. Never bury the crown.

Spacing

18-24 in apart. Sneezewort (A. ptarmica) spreads faster; give it room or an edged spot.

Soil

Average to sandy or gravelly loam; tolerates poor soil · pH 6.0–8.0

Fix-it tip: In heavy clay, plant on a slight mound or raised bed and mix in grit. Skip compost-heavy amendments; rich soil causes weak, sprawling stems.

Sun

Full sun (tolerates light part shade).

In shade, stems stretch and flop and colors fade. Six or more hours of sun keeps clumps tight.
