Sassy Summer Sunset produces big flower heads that open dark orange and mature to yellow, so the plant glows with a sunset range of warm tones all summer long. It matches the tallest in its group, reaching up to three feet.
Its upright stems stay sturdy in lean soil, making it a good fit for the middle or back of a sunny border, a meadow planting or a cutting garden. It is drought tolerant once established, loved by pollinators and generally ignored by deer and rabbits.
What it looks like
Large, flat flower heads 4 to 5 inches across of tiny florets; new heads are dark burnt orange, maturing through golden orange to yellow, so orange, gold and yellow heads mix on one plant. Heads sit on tall, straight stems. Foliage is green, finely divided and fernlike. The plant is upright, 30 to 36 inches tall and 30 to 32 inches wide. At peak bloom the top of the plant is a warm patchwork of orange and yellow plates.
Growing it with lavender
Sassy Summer Sunset thrives in the same hot, sunny, well-drained spots as lavender, and its orange-to-yellow heads make a vivid complementary contrast with purple lavender in midsummer.
Care
Plant in full sun and lean to average, well-drained soil; water regularly the first season, then only during long dry spells. Hardy in USDA zones 3-8. Rich soil makes stems floppy. Shear the stems back by about half once the first flush fades to encourage a second round of flowers and keep the clump tidy.
