About the Product

Sassy Summer Taffy opens dark salmon pink and softens to peachy pink as the flowers age, giving a sweet, candy-colored mix across the plant. It grows in a dense, upright form that holds together well through the season.

At 26 to 32 inches tall and a bit narrower than its relatives, it fits neatly into sunny borders, cottage gardens, containers and cutting beds. It is drought tolerant once established, a strong draw for butterflies and bees, and rarely touched by deer or rabbits.

What it looks like

Flat flower clusters 3 to 4 inches across of tiny florets; fresh clusters are dark salmon pink, fading to soft peachy pink and pale peach with age, so several shades of pink mix on the plant. Clusters are carried on upright, sturdy stems. Foliage is green, finely divided and feathery, forming a dense base. The plant is dense and upright, 26 to 32 inches tall and 22 to 26 inches wide. At peak bloom it is topped with a blend of salmon and peach-pink plates.

Growing it with lavender

Sassy Summer Taffy shares lavender's need for sun and lean, well-drained soil, and its salmon and peach-pink tones soften and warm up a planting of purple lavender during their shared summer bloom.

Care

Plant in full sun and lean to average, well-drained soil; water regularly the first season, then only during long dry spells. Hardy in USDA zones 3-8. Shear the stems back by about half once the first flush fades to encourage a second round of flowers and keep the clump tidy.

How to grow Sassy Summer Taffy

Yarrow · Achillea

Yarrow wants full sun and lean, well-drained soil. Rich soil, extra fertilizer, or wet feet make it floppy and short-lived.

When it arrives

Your bare-root plant

Expect a tan, fibrous root mass with a small crown and maybe short gray-green shoots. Soak roots 20-30 min, spread them in the hole, crown level with soil. Plant soon; keep roots moist until then.

Expect new growth in about 6 weeks after planting. Bare root ships March–May while dormant, with little or no top growth, and it can look lifeless until then. That’s normal. Ferny leaves often stay green over winter. New gray-green growth pushes from the base in early spring (about April in Michigan). Flower stems follow in late spring.

You won’t be able to tell within 24 hours of arrival whether a dormant plant will grow.

When to plant

Spring after hard frost, or early fall at least 6 weeks before the ground freezes.

How deep

Set the crown (where stems meet roots) level with the soil surface. Never bury the crown.

Spacing

18-24 in apart. Sneezewort (A. ptarmica) spreads faster; give it room or an edged spot.

Soil

Average to sandy or gravelly loam; tolerates poor soil · pH 6.0–8.0

Fix-it tip: In heavy clay, plant on a slight mound or raised bed and mix in grit. Skip compost-heavy amendments; rich soil causes weak, sprawling stems.

Sun

Full sun (tolerates light part shade).

In shade, stems stretch and flop and colors fade. Six or more hours of sun keeps clumps tight.
