Silver Fox seems to glow silver at first glance. Its leaves are actually light green under a thick waxy coating, with faint blue-purple spotting beneath that is hard to see from a distance.
The thick, arching leaves have well-defined teeth along the edges, giving the plant a handsome, sculptural habit. It stays 8 to 10 inches tall and fits well in containers and sunny rock gardens.
What it looks like
Thick, arching, lance-shaped leaves about 1½ to 2 inches wide are light green beneath a heavy waxy coating that makes them look glowing silver. Faint blue-purple spots show faintly through the coating. The margins carry distinct, evenly spaced teeth, and each leaf ends in a tip spine. The leaves form an open, arching rosette 8 to 10 inches tall and 16 to 18 inches wide that looks like a pale silver star.
Growing it with lavender
Mangave loves the same full sun and sharp drainage as lavender, so a pot of it set among the lavender beds or on a sunny gravel patio makes a bold, spiky contrast for summer before it moves indoors.
Care
Plant in full sun, where the leaf color and spotting are strongest, in gritty, fast-draining soil or cactus mix, and water when the soil is dry. In the Great Lakes region, grow it as a summer container plant and bring it indoors to a bright window before frost. Hardy outdoors in zones 9 to 11.
