Silver Gumdrop pairs iridescent silver leaves with vibrant pink flowers, a combination that is less common among silver coral bells, which usually bloom white or cream. Later in the season the leaves take on a rosy blush.
It is a smaller variety, 6 to 8 inches tall and 14 to 24 inches wide, but a vigorous grower for its size. That compact scale makes it a natural for containers and the front edge of shade beds. Flower stems rise 20 to 24 inches in midsummer.
What it looks like
A compact, low mound 6 to 8 inches tall and 14 to 24 inches wide of small, rounded, semi-glossy leaves in iridescent silver, taking on a rosy blush later in the season. Stems 20 to 24 inches tall carry narrow spikes of small vibrant pink bell flowers in midsummer. At peak the planting is a small shimmering silver cushion with bright pink wands rising well above it.
Growing it with lavender
This is a shade plant, so place it in a shaded bed or container away from the lavender, where its silver leaves brighten dark corners.
Care
Best in part to full shade. Plant in average to fertile, well-drained soil and water regularly; winter wet leads to rot. Hardy in zones 4-9; deadhead the flower stems and trim old leaves in early spring.
