Sparkling Sapphires has intensely vivid violet blue flowers with pale yellow keels, blooming in late spring around the same time as peonies. The color is among the brightest of any false indigo.
Its shorter, compact size, about 30 to 36 inches, makes it easy to fit into a flower garden. Seed pods form right after bloom, darkening and lasting into fall. It is long lived, drought tolerant once established and deer resistant.
What it looks like
Upright spikes about 8 inches long of pea-shaped flowers in vivid violet blue with pale yellow keels, held above the foliage. Leaves are three-parted with oval gray-green leaflets. The plant is a compact, rounded mound 30 to 36 inches tall and wide. At peak bloom the mound is topped with bright violet blue spikes; dark seed pods follow.
Growing it with lavender
Sparkling Sapphires shares lavender's love of sun and lean, well-drained soil, and its vivid violet blue spikes bloom right before lavender for a continuous run of blue and purple.
Care
Plant in full sun to part shade in lean to average, well-drained soil; the deep taproot makes it drought tolerant once established. Hardy in USDA zones 4-9. Choose a permanent spot, since established plants do not like to be moved; expect a couple of seasons to settle in, and cut back in late fall or leave the seed pods for winter interest.
