Star of the North has uniquely shaped, triangular flowers with pale yellow petals, a large wine purple eye and a razor-thin wine purple edge. The distinctive form is easy to recognize from across the garden.
It offers improved form, more buds, good branching and rebloom, blooming from midsummer into late summer on 34-inch scapes. The flowers are fragrant.
What it looks like
Triangular flowers about 5 inches across with pale yellow petals, a large wine purple eye zone and a razor-thin wine purple edge, with a green throat. Each bloom lasts a day, but many buds open in turn on branched scapes rising to about 34 inches above a fountain of long, arching, strap-shaped medium green leaves. The foliage clump is about 20 inches tall and 18 to 24 inches wide. At peak bloom pale yellow triangular flowers with wine eyes stand tall above the leaves.
Growing it with lavender
Its wine purple eye echoes lavender while the pale yellow brightens the planting, all in full sun and good drainage.
Care
Grow in full sun to light part shade (at least six hours of sun for the best bloom) in average, well-drained soil; once established it handles heat, clay and dry spells. Hardy in zones 3 to 9. Remove spent scapes promptly to encourage a later round of flowers, and divide crowded clumps every few years.
