About the Product

Steel the Show is a groundcover stonecrop with some of the most silvery blue-green foliage you will find in a sedum. The tiny leaves give the mat a soft, airy texture that looks great beside broad-leaved plants.

It is one of the latest sedums to bloom, opening rich rosy pink flowers in early fall. Use it to cover slopes, fill dry, sunny spots or edge a path. It is extremely drought tolerant and low maintenance.

What it looks like

Tiny, fleshy, narrow to rounded leaves under half an inch long in bright silvery blue-green, crowded along short, trailing stems. In early fall, small clusters of rich rosy pink star-shaped flowers appear just above the foliage. The plant forms a low, dense mat 6 to 8 inches tall and 14 to 16 inches wide with a fine, airy texture. At peak it looks like a silver-blue carpet dotted with rosy pink.

Growing it with lavender

This low sedum thrives in the same hot, sunny, well-drained ground as lavender, making a tidy succulent carpet along the front edge of a lavender bed or between stepping stones.

Care

Plant in full sun in average to poor, well-drained soil; it is very drought tolerant and does not like wet feet. Hardy in zones 3-9; trim off faded flower stems after bloom if you want a neater mat, and divide or replant pieces anywhere you want it to fill in.

Your plug tray

Plugs are small and tender. Pot into 4-inch pots and grow on 3–5 weeks in bright light, or plant out after frost. Keep evenly moist, harden off a week, and set the plug top level with the soil.

When to plant

Spring through early fall.

How deep

Set the crown level with the soil surface.

Spacing

Upright types 18–24 inches; low mounding types 12–18 inches.

Soil

Sandy, gravelly or average loam · pH 6.0–7.5

Fix-it tip: Don't enrich the soil. In clay, add grit and plant slightly high. Rich soil and water make stems split open.

Full sun (tolerates light part shade).

In shade, stems stretch and flop open.

Is it alive? What spring looks like
