Storm Shelter has 5-inch mauve flowers with an enormous deep eggplant purple eye that stretches nearly to the edges. The pie-crust edges carry a wide picotee in the same eggplant color.
The flowers have heavy substance that stands up to rough weather, and the plant reblooms from midsummer into early fall.
What it looks like
Flowers about 5 inches across with rounded petals in soft mauve, an enormous deep eggplant purple eye that reaches nearly to the petal edges, pie-crust ruffled margins with a wide eggplant picotee and a green throat. Each bloom lasts a day, but many buds open in turn on branched scapes rising to about 24 inches above a fountain of long, arching, strap-shaped medium green leaves. The foliage clump is about 14 inches tall and 18 to 24 inches wide. At peak bloom rich mauve-and-eggplant flowers stand above the leaves.
Growing it with lavender
Its eggplant purple eye complements lavender beautifully in the same sunny, well-drained bed.
Care
Grow in full sun to light part shade (at least six hours of sun for the best bloom) in average, well-drained soil; once established it handles heat, clay and dry spells. Hardy in zones 3 to 9. Deadhead regularly and pull spent scapes to keep new buds coming, and divide crowded clumps every few years.
