About the Product

Sultry Night is a dark, tidy coral bells with ruffled black leaves washed in purple. The purple highlights repeat on the leaf backs and stems, and the leaves open glossy in spring and keep their deep color all season.

Short leaf stalks hold the foliage close, creating a dense, rounded plant 8 to 10 inches tall and 16 to 20 inches wide. It handles poor to average soil and works well as edging, in mass plantings, as a container accent or as cut foliage.

What it looks like

A dense, rounded mound 8 to 10 inches tall and 16 to 20 inches wide of ruffled leaves held tightly on short stalks. The leaves are black with a purple overlay, glossy when new, with purple undersides and purple stems. Slim stems carry small flowers in midsummer above the foliage. At peak the plant is a compact, shiny black-purple dome with neat, rippled texture.

Growing it with lavender

The dark purple-black mound makes a dramatic low edging in front of lavender at a bed end with afternoon shade and a bit more water.

Care

Grows in full sun to full shade; afternoon shade helps in hot spots. Tolerates poor to average soil if drainage is good; water in dry spells. Hardy in zones 4-9; trim winter-worn leaves in early spring.

Hardy in zones 4a–9b

Spring or early fall (at least 6 weeks before freeze so roots anchor).

When it arrives

Your plug tray

Plugs are small and dry out fast. Water on arrival, keep in bright light, and harden off a week before planting. Pot 72-cell plugs into 4 in pots to bulk up, or plant 20-cell plugs straight into the bed. Shade from midday sun the first weeks.

When to plant

Spring or early fall (at least 6 weeks before freeze so roots anchor).

How deep

Set the crown exactly at soil level; the woody stem should not be buried or left exposed.

Spacing

12-18 in apart, wider for large-leaf types.

Soil

Humus-rich loam · pH 6.0–7.5

Fix-it tip: Mix compost into clay or sand. Crowns rot in wet, heavy soil, so avoid low spots and don't pile mulch against the crown.

Sun

Part shade (tolerates full sun in cool climates with moisture; full shade).

Leaf color decides: dark and amber types scorch in hot sun. Varieties bred from H. villosa handle more heat and humidity.

Dormant
New growth

Don’t give up on it

Is it alive? What spring looks like

Semi-evergreen. Old leaves often look battered in early spring; new leaves unfurl from the center in April. Trim the old ones once fresh growth shows.
