About the Product

Sum and Substance is one of the largest hostas you can grow, with broad leaves up to 16 inches long on a huge mound about 3 feet tall and 5 to 6 feet wide. It is a proven, fast-growing classic.

Leaf color shifts with light, from light green in shade to chartreuse or gold with a few hours of sun, and it takes more sun than most hostas. The thick, glossy, puckered leaves resist slugs. Pale lavender bells open on 4-foot scapes in mid to late summer. Use it as a specimen or to fill a big space.

What it looks like

Very large, broadly oval leaves up to 16 inches long in chartreuse to gold, lighter green in deeper shade. Leaves are thick, glossy and lightly corrugated with prominent veins. The plant forms a huge, rounded mound about 36 inches tall and 5 to 6 feet wide. In mid to late summer, scapes about 4 feet tall carry pale lavender bell-shaped flowers. At peak it is an enormous chartreuse-gold dome with tall lavender spikes above.

Growing it with lavender

Even though it handles some sun, it still wants richer, moister soil than lavender, so plant it in a separate bed with daylilies, astilbe or ferns rather than in a dry lavender border.

Care

Does best with a quarter to three-quarters of a day of sun, which deepens the gold color, in rich soil that stays evenly moist. Hardy in zones 3-9. Give it plenty of room, water deeply in hot weather, and remove spent scapes after bloom.

How to grow Sum and Substance

Hosta · Hosta

Hostas want shade to part shade and rich, moist, well-drained soil. Blue and big-leaved types (like H. sieboldiana) need the most shade; many gold and fragrant types tolerate more sun.

Hardy in zones 3a–9b

Spring through early fall; spring as eyes emerge is easiest.

When it arrives

Your plug tray

Plant 20-cell plugs straight into the garden or a 1-gallon pot; pot 72-cell plugs into 4-inch pots to bulk up first. Keep in shade and evenly moist. Plugs take 3–5 years to show mature leaf size.

When to plant

Spring through early fall; spring as eyes emerge is easiest.

How deep

Set the crown (where roots meet shoots) even with the soil surface. Plants from pots go at the same depth they grew.

Spacing

By mature size: minis 6–12 inches; medium 2 feet; giants 3–5 feet.

Soil

Rich, loamy, high in organic matter · pH 5.5–7.0

Fix-it tip: Mix in compost, composted manure or leaves. In clay, raise the planting area slightly so crowns don't sit wet over winter.

Sun

Part shade (tolerates full shade; morning sun).

Blue-leaved types keep their color best in shade. Gold types brighten with some morning sun; most scorch in hot afternoon sun.

Don’t give up on it

Is it alive? What spring looks like

Pointed shoots (eyes) push up in mid to late spring, later than many perennials, and unfurl over a couple of weeks. Small plants may stay dormant until May; a firm crown is alive.
