About the Product

Summer Breeze is a hardy Peruvian lily that blooms from midsummer until frost. Each flower blends sunny yellow centers with peach petals and apricot backs, and the purple-black tinted foliage makes the warm colors glow.

It grows into a vigorous, tall plant about three feet high and wide, with long, sturdy stems of florist-quality flowers that last a long time in a vase. It has overwintered for multiple seasons in zone 6 and does best in well-drained soil with winter protection. Bees and butterflies visit the open blooms.

What it looks like

Clusters of lily-like, funnel-shaped flowers 2 to 3 inches across at the tops of tall, leafy stems; each flower has peach petals, apricot outer backs and a sunny yellow throat with fine dark streaks on the upper petals. Leaves are narrow, lance-shaped and twisted at the base, in dark green with purple-black tones. The plant is vigorous and upright, 36 to 42 inches tall and wide. At peak bloom clusters of peach and yellow flowers top many dark stems.

Growing it with lavender

Peruvian lily prefers richer, more evenly moist soil than lavender, so give it its own sunny bed or a large container near the patio, where its long-lasting flowers are easy to cut.

Care

Plant in full sun to part shade in fertile, well-drained soil with even moisture; set the rhizomes about 1 inch deep. Hardy in USDA zones 6-9; in zone 5 and colder, give a thick winter mulch or grow in containers moved to a protected spot. For cutting, pull stems from the base rather than cutting, which encourages more flowers.

How to grow Summer Breeze

Peruvian Lily · Alstroemeria

Peruvian lily wants sun with some afternoon relief, rich well-drained soil, and steady moisture. In cold Northern gardens it needs deep winter mulch or a frost-free spot.

Hardy in zones 6a–9b

Spring after frost danger. In cold regions plant early so roots establish before winter.

When it arrives

Your plug tray

Plugs are small and dry out fast. Water on arrival, keep in bright light, and harden off a week before planting. Pot up 72-cell plugs into 4 in pots and grow on until roots fill the pot before planting out. Roots snap easily. Plant out after frost.

When to plant

Spring after frost danger. In cold regions plant early so roots establish before winter.

How deep

Roots are brittle, finger-like tubers. Spread them over a small mound and cover. Set plugs slightly deeper than they grew for cold protection.

Spacing

About 12-18 in apart; compact types closer.

Soil

Fertile loam high in organic matter · pH 6.0–7.0

Fix-it tip: Work in compost to hold moisture while still draining. In clay, raise the bed; the tuberous roots rot in waterlogged soil.

Sun

Full sun (tolerates part shade).

In hot summers, afternoon shade keeps it blooming longer; in cool climates give full sun.

Dormant
New growth

Don’t give up on it

Is it alive? What spring looks like

Comes up later than many perennials once soil warms; in cold areas, shoots may not show until mid to late spring. Don't dig to check; the brittle roots break.
