Summer Heat is a large-flowered red Peruvian lily with tall stems and a long season of bloom. Each rich red flower has a bold yellow flare in the center, giving it a bright, tropical look from midsummer on.
The tall, sturdy stems and uniform flowers are florist quality and last a long time after cutting. It has overwintered for several seasons in zone 6 and does best in well-drained soil with winter protection. Use it as a focal point in a sunny border or a large patio container.
What it looks like
Clusters of large, lily-like, flared flowers about 3 inches across at the tops of tall, upright leafy stems; petals are rich scarlet red, with a prominent golden yellow flare on the upper petals marked with fine dark streaks. Leaves are narrow, lance-shaped, medium green and twisted at the base. The plant is upright, 36 to 42 inches tall and 30 to 36 inches wide. At peak bloom red flower clusters crown dozens of tall stems.
Growing it with lavender
Peruvian lily prefers richer, more evenly moist soil than lavender, so give it its own sunny bed or a large container near the patio, where its long-lasting flowers are easy to cut.
Care
Plant in full sun to part shade in fertile, well-drained soil with even moisture; set the rhizomes about 1 inch deep. Hardy in USDA zones 6-9; in zone 5 and colder, give a thick winter mulch or grow in containers moved to a protected spot. For cutting, pull stems from the base rather than cutting, which encourages more flowers.
