About the Product

Sun King is a bold foliage perennial with large, bright gold leaves on reddish brown stems. With a few hours of sun each day the leaves stay golden all summer; in deeper shade they turn chartreuse to lime green, still brightening dark corners.

It quickly grows into a big, shrub-like clump about four feet tall and wide, sometimes reaching six feet, dying back to the ground in winter. In mid to late summer, spikes of tiny white flowers attract honeybees and are followed by dark purple-black berries that are not edible. It is a great companion for hostas and other woodland plants and is remarkably resistant to deer.

What it looks like

Very large compound leaves up to 3 feet long, divided into many oval, pointed leaflets 3 to 6 inches long in bright golden yellow, carried on thick reddish brown stems. In mid to late summer, upright branched spikes of tiny white flowers rise above the leaves, later followed by small round purple-black berries. The plant is a bold, shrub-like clump about 4 feet tall and wide when established, up to 6 feet tall with age. At its best the whole clump glows gold in partial shade.

Growing it with lavender

Sun King needs moist, rich soil and part shade, so it belongs in a woodland or shade garden with hostas and ferns rather than in a sunny lavender bed.

Care

Plant in part shade in rich, deep, organic soil that stays moist but drains well; it is not drought tolerant. Hardy in USDA zones 3-9. A few hours of sun keeps the leaves gold; cut stems to the ground after frost, and give it plenty of room to spread.

Hardy in zones 3a–9b

Spring after frost, or early fall.

When it arrives

Your plug tray

Plugs arrive in active growth. Water the tray right away and keep it in bright shade, never hot sun. Plant within a few days or move into 3–4" pots. Set each plug so its top is level with the soil, and keep it evenly moist for the first month.

When to plant

Spring after frost, or early fall.

How deep

Plant with the top of the plug or root ball level with the surrounding soil.

Spacing

3–4 ft apart; mature clumps get about 3 ft tall and wide or more.

Soil

Rich, humusy loam · pH 5.5–7.0

Fix-it tip: Work in plenty of compost or leaf mold. Mulch 2" to hold moisture. Avoid dry, sandy spots unless you can water.

Sun

Part shade (tolerates morning sun; golden types like sun king take more sun if kept moist).

Hot afternoon sun scorches leaves. In deep shade, golden foliage turns more chartreuse-green.

Dormant
New growth

Don’t give up on it

Is it alive? What spring looks like

Emerges in mid- to late spring as thick shoots from below ground, then grows fast. Don't dig in the area before late spring; it can look like nothing is there.
