About the Product

Time in a Bottle has narrow, gently wavy yellow leaves that turn more chartreuse through the summer. Its fine texture is a nice contrast to broad-leaved plants in the shade garden.

It forms a mound about 12 inches tall and 3 feet wide. In late summer it sends up deep purple flower buds that never fully open, so they stay on the stems and last longer than typical hosta blooms. Try it in a container or along the front of a shade bed.

What it looks like

Narrow, lance-shaped leaves in yellow, becoming chartreuse through summer, with moderately wavy edges. Leaves arch outward from the crown, forming a spreading mound about 12 inches tall and 36 inches wide. In late summer, scapes 16 to 24 inches tall carry deep purple, tubular flowers that stay closed like elongated buds. The leaf surface is smooth with a slight sheen. At peak the dark purple buds contrast with the fine yellow-green foliage.

Growing it with lavender

Hostas want shade and steady moisture, the opposite of lavender's hot, dry bed, so give this one a spot under trees or along the north side of the house with ferns and astilbe.

Care

Plant in part to full shade in rich, humus-heavy soil that stays evenly moist but drains well; water deeply during dry spells, especially the first summer. Hardy in zones 3-9. Cut spent scapes after bloom and divide crowded clumps in early spring as the shoots emerge.

How to grow Time in a Bottle

Hosta · Hosta

Hostas want shade to part shade and rich, moist, well-drained soil. Blue and big-leaved types (like H. sieboldiana) need the most shade; many gold and fragrant types tolerate more sun.

Hardy in zones 3a–9b

Spring through early fall; spring as eyes emerge is easiest.

When it arrives

Your plug tray

Plant 20-cell plugs straight into the garden or a 1-gallon pot; pot 72-cell plugs into 4-inch pots to bulk up first. Keep in shade and evenly moist. Plugs take 3–5 years to show mature leaf size.

When to plant

Spring through early fall; spring as eyes emerge is easiest.

How deep

Set the crown (where roots meet shoots) even with the soil surface. Plants from pots go at the same depth they grew.

Spacing

By mature size: minis 6–12 inches; medium 2 feet; giants 3–5 feet.

Soil

Rich, loamy, high in organic matter · pH 5.5–7.0

Fix-it tip: Mix in compost, composted manure or leaves. In clay, raise the planting area slightly so crowns don't sit wet over winter.

Sun

Part shade (tolerates full shade; morning sun).

Blue-leaved types keep their color best in shade. Gold types brighten with some morning sun; most scorch in hot afternoon sun.

Dormant
New growth

Don’t give up on it

Is it alive? What spring looks like

Pointed shoots (eyes) push up in mid to late spring, later than many perennials, and unfurl over a couple of weeks. Small plants may stay dormant until May; a firm crown is alive.
