About the Product

Timeless Night pairs deep black leaves with a long run of medium pink flowers held in darker pink cups. The flowers keep coming over the summer, so the plant offers both dark foliage and steady color.

It stays compact, 8 to 10 inches tall and 16 to 18 inches wide, with flower stems of 16 to 18 inches that suit its size. It works well as an edging plant, in containers and in mass plantings, and the stems can be cut for small bouquets.

What it looks like

A compact, dense mound 8 to 10 inches tall and 16 to 18 inches wide of rounded, deep black leaves. Dark stems 16 to 18 inches tall carry narrow spikes of small medium pink bells held in dark pink calyces. At peak bloom the plant is a tight black cushion covered in a crown of pink flower wands.

Growing it with lavender

Its black leaves and pink flowers make a bold edging in front of lavender at a bed end with afternoon shade and a bit more water.

Care

Grows in full sun to full shade, with afternoon shade best in hot sites. Plant in average to fertile, well-drained soil and water regularly; hardy in zones 4-9. Deadhead spent flower stems to keep new blooms coming.

Hardy in zones 4a–9b

Spring or early fall (at least 6 weeks before freeze so roots anchor).

When it arrives

Your plug tray

Plugs are small and dry out fast. Water on arrival, keep in bright light, and harden off a week before planting. Pot 72-cell plugs into 4 in pots to bulk up, or plant 20-cell plugs straight into the bed. Shade from midday sun the first weeks.

When to plant

Spring or early fall (at least 6 weeks before freeze so roots anchor).

How deep

Set the crown exactly at soil level; the woody stem should not be buried or left exposed.

Spacing

12-18 in apart, wider for large-leaf types.

Soil

Humus-rich loam · pH 6.0–7.5

Fix-it tip: Mix compost into clay or sand. Crowns rot in wet, heavy soil, so avoid low spots and don't pile mulch against the crown.

Sun

Part shade (tolerates full sun in cool climates with moisture; full shade).

Leaf color decides: dark and amber types scorch in hot sun. Varieties bred from H. villosa handle more heat and humidity.

Dormant
New growth

Don’t give up on it

Is it alive? What spring looks like

Semi-evergreen. Old leaves often look battered in early spring; new leaves unfurl from the center in April. Trim the old ones once fresh growth shows.
