About the Product

Toffee Tart shifts through warm shades as the year goes on. Spring leaves open amber with a silver overlay, summer leaves turn ginger with that same silvery sheen, and by late summer they settle to green, giving the plant a changing look from season to season.

It stays low and tidy at 8 to 10 inches tall and 16 to 18 inches wide. Creamy white flowers rise on burgundy stems in early summer. It has done well in Michigan trials and is useful for brightening beds or filling out mixed containers.

What it looks like

A low, mounding plant 8 to 10 inches tall and 16 to 18 inches wide of rounded leaves. In spring the leaves are amber with a silver overlay; in summer they turn ginger caramel with a silvery sheen; in late summer they mature to green. Burgundy stems 20 to 24 inches tall carry airy sprays of tiny creamy white flowers in early summer. At peak the plant is a warm caramel mound with a light white haze on dark stems above it.

Growing it with lavender

Its warm amber and ginger tones contrast with lavender's cool gray-green in front of a bed where it gets afternoon shade and a bit more moisture.

Care

Grows in full sun to full shade. Plant in average to fertile, well-drained soil and water regularly; hardy in zones 4-9. Trim spent flower stems after bloom and tidy old leaves in spring.

How to grow Toffee Tart

Coral Bells · Heuchera

Hardy in zones 4a–9b

Spring or early fall (at least 6 weeks before freeze so roots anchor).

When it arrives

Your plug tray

Plugs are small and dry out fast. Water on arrival, keep in bright light, and harden off a week before planting. Pot 72-cell plugs into 4 in pots to bulk up, or plant 20-cell plugs straight into the bed. Shade from midday sun the first weeks.

When to plant

Spring or early fall (at least 6 weeks before freeze so roots anchor).

How deep

Set the crown exactly at soil level; the woody stem should not be buried or left exposed.

Spacing

12-18 in apart, wider for large-leaf types.

Soil

Humus-rich loam · pH 6.0–7.5

Fix-it tip: Mix compost into clay or sand. Crowns rot in wet, heavy soil, so avoid low spots and don't pile mulch against the crown.

Sun

Part shade (tolerates full sun in cool climates with moisture; full shade).

Leaf color decides: dark and amber types scorch in hot sun. Varieties bred from H. villosa handle more heat and humidity.

New growth

Don’t give up on it

Is it alive? What spring looks like

Semi-evergreen. Old leaves often look battered in early spring; new leaves unfurl from the center in April. Trim the old ones once fresh growth shows.
