About the Product

Tristan is a compact everbearing strawberry that makes few or no runners, so it stays neat in a pot on the patio table. Hot magenta-pink flowers sit on top of dark green leaves while small, bright red berries ripen at the same time.

The 1-inch fruits are very aromatic and sugary sweet, and the plant keeps flowering and fruiting all summer. It also grows happily in the garden if you prefer to plant it in the ground.

What it looks like

Five-petaled, hot magenta-pink flowers about 1 inch across with golden yellow centers are held just above the foliage. Leaves are dark green, glossy and divided into three rounded, toothed leaflets. Small, bright red, conical berries about 1 inch long hang among the leaves while the plant continues to flower. The plant forms a compact, tidy mound about 12 inches tall and 20 to 25 inches wide with few or no runners.

Growing it with lavender

Strawberries enjoy full sun like lavender but want richer, more evenly moist soil, so grow them in a nearby raised bed or kitchen garden rather than among the lavender.

Care

Grow in full sun in fertile, well-drained soil or potting mix, keeping it evenly moist and planting with the crown at soil level. Hardy in zones 4 to 8. Feed lightly during the season to keep flowers and fruit coming.

Hardy in zones 4a–8b

Early spring once soil warms; potted plants after frost risk is past.

When it arrives

Your plug tray

Plugs arrive in active growth. Water the tray right away, set it in bright light out of harsh wind, and plant within a few days. If you wait, bump them into 3–4" pots. Harden off for a week before planting out, and keep the root ball moist the first 3–4 weeks.

When to plant

Early spring once soil warms; potted plants after frost risk is past.

How deep

Set the middle of the crown exactly at the soil line: roots fully buried, growing tip uncovered. Too deep rots; too shallow dries out.

Spacing

18–24" apart in rows 3–4 ft apart (matted row); day-neutral types about 12" apart.

Soil

Loamy, rich in organic matter · pH 5.5–6.5

Fix-it tip: Get a soil test first. Work in compost; plant in raised rows or beds in heavy soil. Avoid spots where tomatoes, potatoes or peppers grew recently (shared root diseases).

Sun

Full sun (tolerates light shade, with less fruit).

Full sun gives the most and sweetest berries.

Don’t give up on it

Is it alive? What spring looks like

New leaves appear from the crown within a couple of weeks of spring planting. Established plants green up early in spring once winter straw is pulled back.
