About the Product

Twist of Lime has very wavy, bright chartreuse yellow leaves that bring a lively texture to shady beds. The ruffling is strongest on young leaves and relaxes as they mature, so the mound shows a mix of frilled and smoother foliage.

It grows 8 to 10 inches tall and 12 to 16 inches wide. Cream flowers appear in early summer on stems 18 to 20 inches tall. For the brightest yellow, give it dappled shade or morning sun.

What it looks like

A low mound 8 to 10 inches tall and 12 to 16 inches wide of rounded leaves in bright chartreuse yellow. Young leaves are strongly wavy and ruffled along the margins; older leaves are flatter. In early summer, stems 18 to 20 inches tall carry airy sprays of tiny cream flowers. At peak the plant is a bright, crinkled yellow cushion with a soft cream haze above.

Growing it with lavender

Twist of Lime needs shade, so plant it in a shaded bed away from the lavender, where its chartreuse ruffles can light up hostas and ferns.

Care

Best in part to full shade; dappled light or morning sun gives the brightest yellow. Plant in average to fertile, well-drained soil with regular water; hardy in zones 4-9. Trim spent flower stems and old leaves in early spring.

Hardy in zones 4a–9b

Spring or early fall (at least 6 weeks before freeze so roots anchor).

When it arrives

Your plug tray

Plugs are small and dry out fast. Water on arrival, keep in bright light, and harden off a week before planting. Pot 72-cell plugs into 4 in pots to bulk up, or plant 20-cell plugs straight into the bed. Shade from midday sun the first weeks.

When to plant

Spring or early fall (at least 6 weeks before freeze so roots anchor).

How deep

Set the crown exactly at soil level; the woody stem should not be buried or left exposed.

Spacing

12-18 in apart, wider for large-leaf types.

Soil

Humus-rich loam · pH 6.0–7.5

Fix-it tip: Mix compost into clay or sand. Crowns rot in wet, heavy soil, so avoid low spots and don't pile mulch against the crown.

Sun

Part shade (tolerates full sun in cool climates with moisture; full shade).

Leaf color decides: dark and amber types scorch in hot sun. Varieties bred from H. villosa handle more heat and humidity.

Dormant
New growth

Don’t give up on it

Is it alive? What spring looks like

Semi-evergreen. Old leaves often look battered in early spring; new leaves unfurl from the center in April. Trim the old ones once fresh growth shows.
