About the Product

Red is a compact coreopsis with large flowers that open nearly solid dark red in the first flush, then show golden yellow tips on later blooms, so the plant carries a mix of red and red-and-gold flowers through summer.

The plant forms a tidy, rounded mound 12 to 14 inches tall and wide, a handy size for the front of a border, patio pots or mass planting. It is easy to care for and resists disease, and regular deadheading keeps it flowering from early summer to late summer.

What it looks like

A tidy, rounded mound about 12 to 14 inches tall and wide. Leaves are lance-shaped, 2 to 4 inches long, medium green and smooth, forming a dense base. Flowers are large, about 2.5 to 3 inches across, on upright stems; the first flowers are nearly solid dark red with toothed tips, and later flowers show golden yellow edges on the red petals, all around a small dark gold center. At peak bloom the mound is covered with upward-facing flowers held a few inches above the leaves.

Growing it with lavender

It enjoys lavender's full sun and well-drained soil, and its dark red flowers make a rich, low contrast in front of lavender.

Care

Plant in full sun in average, well-drained soil and water during long dry spells. Hardy in zones 5-9. Deadhead spent flowers regularly, or shear lightly, to keep new blooms coming all summer.

Hardy in zones 5a–9b

Spring after frost or early fall.

When it arrives

Your plug tray

Plugs are small and dry out fast. Water on arrival, keep in bright light, and harden off a week before planting. Pot 72-cell plugs into 3-4 in pots or plant into the bed once rooted. Pinch tips once after planting for bushier plants.

When to plant

Spring after frost or early fall.

How deep

Crown at soil level, same depth as in the pot.

Spacing

12-18 in apart.

Soil

Average, sandy, or loam soil · pH 5.5–7.5

Fix-it tip: In clay, mix in grit and compost and raise the bed; wet winter soil kills many coreopsis. Don't enrich heavily.

Sun

Full sun (tolerates light part shade).

Less sun means fewer flowers and floppy stems.

Dormant
New growth

Don’t give up on it

Is it alive? What spring looks like

Species differ. Large-flowered types keep a green leafy base and grow early in spring; threadleaf and pink tickseed types emerge later, often not until mid to late spring.
