About the Product

Vanilla Cream II is an improved creamy white false indigo that keeps a compact, well-rounded shape while blooming earlier with longer flower spikes. Dark charcoal stems hold dramatic 16 to 18 inch spikes of creamy white flowers.

Branching stems add a second and third flush of blooms, and seed pods form right after flowering and darken into fall. At about three and a half feet tall, it is easy care, drought tolerant, deer resistant and a great choice for low-maintenance native plantings.

What it looks like

Long, branched spikes 16 to 18 inches of pea-shaped flowers in creamy white to soft vanilla, held on dark charcoal stems above the leaves, with secondary spikes branching off. Leaves are three-parted with oval blue-green leaflets. The plant is a compact, well-rounded mound about 42 inches tall and 36 inches wide. At peak bloom creamy spikes on dark stems rise all over the rounded mound.

Growing it with lavender

Vanilla Cream II grows in the same lean, well-drained soil and sun as lavender, and its creamy white spikes and blue-green leaves make a clean, bright partner for purple lavender.

Care

Plant in full sun to part shade in lean to average, well-drained soil; the deep taproot makes it drought tolerant once established. Hardy in USDA zones 4-9. Choose a permanent spot, since established plants do not like to be moved; expect a couple of seasons to settle in, and cut back in late fall or leave the seed pods for winter interest.

How to grow Vanilla Cream II

False Indigo · Baptisia

False indigo wants full sun and a permanent spot. It grows a deep taproot, so it is slow the first couple of years, then becomes a long-lived, drought-tolerant, shrub-sized perennial.

Hardy in zones 4a–9b

Spring or early fall. Choose the spot carefully; mature plants resent moving.

When it arrives

Your plug tray

Baptisia plugs are tiny compared to the mature plant. Pot into a deep 4–6 in pot or plant straight into the final spot so the taproot isn't disturbed. Keep moist the first season; expect slow top growth while roots build.

When to plant

Spring or early fall. Choose the spot carefully; mature plants resent moving.

How deep

Set the crown so the pinkish buds sit about 1 in below the soil surface, with the long roots pointing straight down in a deep hole.

Spacing

About 3–4 ft apart; mature plants are shrub-sized.

Soil

Average loam; tolerates clay, rocky and poor soils · pH 5.5–7.5

Fix-it tip: It fixes its own nitrogen, so skip rich amendments. Loosen soil deeply for the taproot. NC State lists slightly acidic soil as best, but it adapts widely.

Sun

Full sun (tolerates part sun).

In shade, stems get leggy and the plant flops open after bloom.

Is it alive? What spring looks like

Thick, asparagus-like shoots push up in mid-spring, often purple-gray at first. Young plants may send up only a few stems; blooms usually start the second or third year.
