Victoriae is an unusual form of lady fern whose leaflets cross over one another up the length of each frond, making a lattice pattern. The frond tips are crested and keep lengthening through the season until they look like a fringed tassel.
It forms a dense, cascading mound of dark green about 18 to 24 inches tall. The fine, crisscrossed texture is a great contrast to broad-leaved shade plants like hostas and coral bells.
What it looks like
Narrow, dark green fronds about 18 to 24 inches long carry paired leaflets that cross each other in an X pattern along the stem, forming a lattice or braided look. The leaflet ends and the frond tips are crested into small forked tufts, and the frond tips lengthen into fringe-like tassels by late summer. Fronds arch outward from the crown to create a dense, cascading mound 18 to 24 inches tall and wide. In summer the plant is a full, textured dome of deep green crosshatched fronds.
Growing it with lavender
This fern needs moist shade, so it belongs in a woodland or north-side bed with hostas rather than in the sunny lavender garden.
Care
Plant in part to full shade in humus-rich soil that stays evenly moist. Hardy in zones 3 to 8. Cut back old fronds in early spring before new ones unfurl.
