About the Product

Watermelon Ruffles has highly decorative 7-inch magenta pink flowers with heavily ruffled petals. The ends of the petals are so puckered they look notched, giving each bloom a frilly, textured outline.

Buds form along the full length of the stems, so flowering starts earlier in the season than traditional types and continues into early fall. Dark green leaves with a bronze cast set off the bright flowers. The plant grows about 4½ feet tall and wide and draws pollinators to the late summer garden.

What it looks like

A full, rounded bush about 54 inches tall and wide of dark green leaves with a bronze cast. Flowers are about 7 inches across, magenta pink, with heavily ruffled petals whose tips are so puckered they look notched. Blooms appear along the full length of the stems. At peak the plant is dotted with frilly magenta pink flowers against dark bronze-green foliage.

Growing it with lavender

Full sun suits it, but its thirst for steady moisture puts it in a watered border, pond edge or rain garden rather than beside lavender.

Care

Plant in full sun for the most flowers; part shade is tolerated. It grows in poor to fertile soil but needs consistent moisture and should never dry out for long; hardy in zones 4-9. It is slow to wake up in spring, so mark the spot, and cut the old stems to the ground in late fall or early spring.

How to grow Watermelon Ruffles

Hardy Hibiscus · Hibiscus

Hardy hibiscus (rose mallow) needs full sun, rich soil and plenty of water. It dies to the ground each winter and is one of the very last perennials to wake up in spring.

Hardy in zones 4a–9b

Late spring once soil has warmed, through early summer.

When it arrives

Your plug tray

Plant plugs once nights are warm, or pot into 4–6 in pots in rich mix first. Keep them evenly moist and in full sun; they grow fast in heat. Expect a smaller plant the first year.

When to plant

Late spring once soil has warmed, through early summer.

How deep

Set the crown, where old stem stubs meet the roots, just below the soil surface with roots spread out.

Spacing

About 3–4 ft apart; mature plants are shrub-sized.

Soil

Loam or silt rich in organic matter · pH 5.5–7.0

Fix-it tip: Mix generous compost into sandy or poor soils to hold moisture. Slightly acidic soil is ideal. It tolerates wet, boggy soil better than drought.

Sun

Full sun (tolerates part sun).

Full sun gives the most flowers and best disease resistance.

Dormant
New growth

Don’t give up on it

Is it alive? What spring looks like

Very late: new shoots often don't appear until late May or June in Michigan, once soil is warm. Don't dig it up. Mark its spot in fall so you don't damage it while you wait.

Care details are written for the whole hardy hibiscus group; a few are our best general guidance rather than cultivar-specific testing.
