About the Product

Wedding Crasher is a double-flowered hellebore with soft pink, 3-inch blooms freely speckled with darker pink. It opens in early spring when little else is in flower and keeps going for six weeks or more.

The evergreen leaves are handsome year round, and deer and rabbits leave the plant alone. It is a lovely choice for a shady woodland bed, where clumps slowly widen over the years.

What it looks like

Fully double, rose-like flowers about 3 inches across with several layers of rounded soft pink petals, liberally sprinkled with small darker raspberry-pink spots, and a center of creamy stamens. Flowers nod gently on thick stems among and above the leaves. Leaves are large, leathery and glossy dark green, divided into toothed, finger-like leaflets. The plant forms a clump 18 to 24 inches tall and wide. At peak bloom the clump holds many layered pink, speckled flowers over dark evergreen foliage.

Growing it with lavender

Hellebores want shade and woodland soil, so give them a shady bed under trees rather than a place beside sun-loving lavender.

Care

Plant in part to full shade in humus-rich, well-drained soil; established plants tolerate dry shade. Hardy in zones 4 to 9. Remove last year's worn leaves in late winter to showcase the flowers.

Hardy in zones 4a–9b

Spring or early fall.

When it arrives

Your plug tray

20-cell plugs are best potted into 1-quart or 4-inch pots and grown on in shade for a season before going into the ground. Expect them to bloom in a year or two once sized up.

When to plant

Spring or early fall.

How deep

Set the crown at soil level, never deeper; buried crowns may fail to bloom or rot.

Spacing

18–24 inches apart.

Soil

Rich, humusy loam · pH 6.0–8.0

Fix-it tip: Work in compost or leaf mold; they tolerate slightly alkaline soil. Avoid low spots that stay wet.

Sun

Part shade (tolerates full shade; morning sun).

Deciduous trees are ideal: sun in winter while blooming, shade in summer.

Dormant
New growth

Don’t give up on it

Is it alive? What spring looks like

Evergreen. Flower buds push up from the crown in late winter (often February to April in Michigan), followed by new leaves. Young plug-grown plants may not bloom the first year.
