About the Product

Whitecaps is a dense, well-branched Stokes' aster with flowers 2.5 to 3 inches across in near-white with a faint blush of pink. From a distance they read as clean white, bright against the rich dark green leaves.

Strong basal branching produces a heavy crop of blooms from midsummer into early fall. It grows into a full clump about 2 feet tall and handles heat and humidity with ease. A fresh, cool note for sunny native gardens and borders.

What it looks like

Flat, cornflower-like flowers 2.5 to 3 inches across in near-white with a very faint blush of pink, an outer ring of fringed petals surrounding a center of smaller, finely cut florets with pale stamens. Many flowers sit on short, branching stems, nearly covering the plant. Leaves are long, smooth, lance-shaped and rich dark green. The plant is a dense, rounded clump 24 to 26 inches tall and 32 to 36 inches wide. At peak it looks like a broad dark green mound dotted all over with white discs.

Growing it with lavender

Stokes' aster shares lavender's liking for full sun and well-drained soil, and its large, fringed blooms in similar purple, blue and white tones carry the lavender color theme through late summer after the main harvest.

Care

Plant in full sun in well-drained soil; it adapts to poor or fertile ground and handles some dryness, but soggy winter soil can rot the crown. Hardy in zones 5-9; deadhead spent flowers to keep new buds coming into early fall, and mulch lightly after the ground freezes in colder areas.
