Wigging Out is a variegated version of Bad Hair Day, with the same long, narrow, arching leaves plus a thin creamy white outline on every leaf. In full sun, red flecks appear across the foliage.
Its leaves cascade away from the center in a lively, tousled shape, so it looks especially good in tall containers and face planters. It stays 8 to 10 inches tall and is easy to care for.
What it looks like
Long, narrow, flexible leaves about ¾ inch wide are green outlined with thin creamy white margins, and fine red flecks appear across them in strong sun. The leaves arch and cascade outward from the center in a loose, tousled rosette 8 to 10 inches tall and 18 to 20 inches wide. Leaf tips are soft. The overall look is an energetic, cascading mop of green and cream leaves.
Growing it with lavender
Mangave loves the same full sun and sharp drainage as lavender, so a pot of it set among the lavender beds or on a sunny gravel patio makes a bold, spiky contrast for summer before it moves indoors.
Care
Plant in full sun, where the leaf color and spotting are strongest, in gritty, fast-draining soil or cactus mix, and water when the soil is dry. In the Great Lakes region, grow it as a summer container plant and bring it indoors to a bright window before frost. Hardy outdoors in zones 8 to 11.
