Wildberry has some of the most intense purple foliage among coral bells. The large, scalloped leaves are very glossy and marked with charcoal veins, and they hold their bold purple through much of the season.
The plant forms a low mound 10 to 14 inches tall and 16 to 20 inches wide. In midsummer, dark stems 26 to 28 inches tall carry white flowers in rosy pink cups. It tolerates poor to average soil, has been a top performer in Michigan State University trials, and was named a national Perennial of the Year in 2023.
What it looks like
A low mound 10 to 14 inches tall and 16 to 20 inches wide of large, scalloped, very glossy leaves in saturated purple with charcoal veins. Dark stems 26 to 28 inches tall carry narrow spikes of tiny white flowers held in rosy pink calyces in midsummer. At peak the plant is a shiny, deep purple mound with slender pink-and-white wands high above.
Growing it with lavender
Its glossy purple leaves echo lavender blooms in front of a lavender planting where there is some afternoon shade and a bit more water.
Care
Grows in full sun to full shade. Tolerates poor to average soil if well drained; water during dry spells. Hardy in zones 4-9; cut back flower stems after bloom and remove old leaves in spring.
